“We would recommend “From Tummy to Mummy” to any mommy-to-be’s! We had such a great experience.”
Nicole, Emmet and Levi:
“Emmet and I met Shaz about 3 weeks after the birth of our son, Levi in December 2015 (who was born a few weeks early). We had trouble breastfeeding from the beginning. We used all the available resources and met with many great lactation consultants, nurses, midwives and other mothers. However, no one had been able to help Levi learn to breastfeed and no one seemed invested in our situation.
Shaz was so different than anyone else we had met. She was so warm, friendly and open with us. We instantly connected with each other and Emmet and I really felt like she cared and wanted to support our family to achieve our breastfeeding goals. She made a genuine effort to get to know us as a family.
She was also very intuitive and present with our son. She had mentioned at our first session that she noticed something was not quite right with Levi. That night we ended up taking him to emergency and he was diagnosed a serious but very treatable illness. Our doctors told us we were lucky we caught it so soon. I know that we would not have gone to the hospital as soon if I had not have met Shaz. I will be forever grateful to her for speaking up and saying something to me.
After my son was treated (he needed brain surgery), we met with her many times over a period of many months (for breastfeeding support and craniosacral therapy). The first few sessions of craniosacral therapy with her and her mentor, Brenda, were extremely powerful in healing all of us from the trauma of his surgery and the shock of his diagnosis. We left one of our first sessions after his surgery and cried in the parking lot for about 10 minutes. We felt so seen, heard and appreciated as parents and we knew our son was going to be impacted in such a positive, loving way.
Each and every time we worked with her, the bonds in our family were strengthened. Although we never reached our breastfeeding goals , she made such an extraordinary difference in all of our lives. With her support, I have been able to donate 16 litres of breast milk to the hospital (so far- I plan to keep my pumping schedule to give all my extra milk away). So not only did she really help us, there are many babies that will get donated breast milk because of her!
We will never forget her kindness, wisdom and generosity. I can honestly say, no one has made a bigger impact on my son’s health than she has and we will be forever grateful.
I would highly recommend seeing Shaz for all your baby related needs. We did move out of the Lower Mainland but if we were still in Vancouver, I would see her once a month for myself and my son for the rest of his adult life.”
Bambi Lashell Berger (professional model) on breastfeeding classes:
“The benefits of breast feeding have always been important to me. Having so many family and friends tell stories of difficulties in their experience, I was horrified it may not be a possibility for me. I went into the breast feeding class with fear, questions and concerns. A few statements made by Shaz during her teaching clicked with me and it was like a light bulb went on and I realized for me there was no way I could get this wrong. My favorite statements were “We are mammals”
LOL! (duh) and
“Our babies are smarter than we are, our bodies know how to make the baby without us doing anything and our baby comes out knowing how to eat without us un-learning them. Its instinct”
All this made me think about how women have been doing this since caveman days with no doctors or information on how to “make” your baby latch.
As soon as my fear was removed, my mindset changed and my first experience was relaxed, beautiful and without flaw. I have been breast feeding my beautiful baby boy without pain, without struggle and have loved the bonding and special Mommy time we have that only I can provide him. Knowing its the healthiest thing I could possibly give and do for my child is a beautiful thing.
Thank you Shaz for all the information provided in your class along with reminding us of our own instinct. ;)”
Bambi on Placenta Encapsulation:
“During my pregnancy I heard about people eating and encapsulating their placenta. My uneducated first thoughts were not good. To be blunt, words like ‘cannibal’ and ‘gross’ ran through my head along with some unattractive facial expressions. Lol
A girlfriend of mine who had just had her second baby called to tell me about how she capsuled her placenta into pills and it was the best decision she made after having heavy postpartum depression with her first baby. She explained that while taking the pills she feels an amazing difference compared to not taking them after her first baby; more energy, no obvious emotional downs and just an all over better experience.
Although I was still weirded out, I decided to research it online since I’d much rather look into preventing possible postpartum than regretting not trying. All the information I came across made sense to me and started to make me feel silly for being grossed out. In fact I was also remembering when I witness my cats have kittens, my dogs have puppies, and even when I watched a cow have a baby calf… They ALL ate the placenta right after. What?? I used to think it was just a way to clean up. But now I realize the instinct to replenish their bodies with what they need as they become the mother to their babies. Instinct!
With all being said, as strange as it still sounds to me at times, I had my placenta put into pill form and have to admit I was able to tell the difference on days I forgot to take them compared to days I did take them. They provided me so much energy to take care of my newborn on no sleep, my mood of being a new mother has been nothing short of over the moon, I have had zero negative mood swings, I’m breast feeding with no shortage of milk production and I feel overall wonderful which isn’t always a given when becoming a first time mom, so I’m told.
Instead of taking the risk of having a less desirable experience postpartum, I plan to do it again with any more children I have, and I will proudly suggest trying it to anyone interested.”
Her husband, Mitch Berger (NFL player) on the breastfeeding classes:
“Going into the breast feeding class I knew nothing about breast feeding. Afterward I felt informed and confident about how to support my wife and the importance of me knowing what she goes through and the benefit details on how important it is for our baby.”
I was referred to Shahrzad by another Vancouver Doula and contacted her via email. Her amazing service started from this point. She was very quick to return this initial email and all other correspondence from this point on. Shahrzad was a midwife in Iran and it was reassuring to know that she had this background though she is very good at treading the line as to what she can and can’t do or advise in Canada. I wanted to hire a doula for the birth of our second child as I wanted to have an experienced support person that I already had a relationship there during the duration of the labour process. This was what I felt was missing in the birth process for our first child. I also wanted to have as natural a birth as possible. We had two visits with Shahrzad (the first was an intro) and we were impressed by her knowledge and balanced approach between the natural and medical model. Although my labour at the hospital ended up being very quick (2 hours 3-5am) I was glad to have Shahrzad there as she constantly looked after my needs, coached my husband, and brought up options whilst being respectful of the doctors/ nurses role. An added bonus for us was that Shahrzad recently became certified as a Lactation Consultant. Our first child had a lot of issues with breast feeding and she was able to help get us started on the right track straight away with letting our daughter latching by herself within an hour (quite something to see). Shahrzad also did a series of post delivery visits with us – msinly focused ion breast feeding. All and all we were very happy that we chose her to be our doula. She is also an amazing lady.

“This was exactly what I needed! I had such an easy recovery it somehow felt wrong! I would definitely do this again and certainly recommend you. You were awesome, thanks!”
Shahrzad was a wonderful blessing to have throughout the birthing process. Prior to our due date, she came to our house and explained the labour process in full, easing our concerns and telling us what to expect. Although I was initially nervous for labour, Shahrzad gave me confidence in the natural birth process and after our meeting, I was much more confident and calm and felt well prepared for having a natural birth as I desired. She was readily available via phone and email in the weeks prior to our due date and checked in regularly to ensure that the last weeks of pregnancy were going well and to answer any questions that I had. She provided us with some resources from her library (on hypnobirthing and breastfeeding) which proved to be invaluable when the big day arrived. During labour, Shahrzad was fantastic! She was able to coach me and my husband over the phone in the earlier stages and came to the house right away when needed. She provided lots of encouragement and had me do exercises to help speed up the labour process, all the while making sure that I was well hydrated and fed, and allowing my husband to rest before it came time to go to the hospital. Shahrzad stayed at the hospital for the entire labour, and helped to keep things calm and peaceful, even amidst what might have been a hectic ending when a vacuum delivery and episiotomy were required. Shahrzad kept me focused and comforted the whole way. After the birth, Shahrzad immediately helped with breastfeeding, encouraging a self-attachment technique, which helped to ensure that our baby was latched well and minimized the common breastfeeding problems which many new mothers often experience. As this was our first baby, having Shahrzad available to come to the house and visit was such a relief. Throughout this whole process I felt that not only was Shahrzad extremely knowledgeable, but she truly cared about our family.
