Using a TENS machine during labour is something that has been done in England for many, many years with great success.   It is natural, non invasive pain relief that does not interfere with the beautifully choreographed dance of hormones that unfolds unseen within your body.  Allowing labour to happen at its own pace in its own time is vital and having the support of a TENS machine helps enormously.

What is a labour TENS?

TENS stands for Trans-cutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A labour TENS machine consists of a hand-held controller connected by two sets of fine leads to four sticky gel covered pads which help electrical pulses pass through your skin more easily. These are placed on your back as shown:

  • Two of the pads are placed on either side of your spine so that the tops of the pads are around bra-strap level.
  • The other two go lower down, at about the level of the dimples on your lower back, just above your bottom.

At the onset of labour, simply apply the four pads provided in your rental to your back as shown in the above diagram and switch the TENS machine on. You will feel a pleasant pulsing sensation. This will help to raise the level of your own pain relieving chemicals known as endorphins. When experiencing a contraction, press the ‘Boost’ button on the right hand side of the Elle TENS and Elle TENS Plus for an extra surge of power needed to combat the pain. When the contraction ends, press the Boost button again – it is that simple!

You have complete control of the intensity of the pulses. These are set from your handheld controller which you can hold, clip to your clothing or most often, hang around your neck with the strap provided.  Your birth partner can place the pads on your back for you.
